The goal of this seminar is to introduce you to a variety of alternative health modalities, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathy, and homeopathy. It will address the following questions:
The seminar will involve talks and practical demonstrations by experienced local practitioners, as well as a chance to experience the healing properties of hatha yoga and Tai Chi. It will take place on Saturday from 9 to 5 and Sunday morning 9 to noon. Healthy snacks and Saturday lunch are included. Andrew Bonner, N.D. graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, a four year medical school in Portland, Oregon, in 1997. He then completed a one-year clinical residency while pursuing a four year postgraduate programe at the Hahnemann School of Homeopathy. He currently has a medical practice in Portland, Oregon specializing in homeopathy and cranial osteopathy. Dr. Bonner's first career was in music. He graduated from Harvard University, pursued graduate study in musicology at Brandeis University, and worked for many years as a professional classical pianist and choral conductor. He also has a law degree from Suffolk Law School in Boston, Massachusetts. He has been involved in meditation and spiritual practice at the Nityananda Institute since 1985.
Arlin Brown, MD is a board certified psychiatrist who obtained his MD from the University of Michigan School of Medicine, where he subsequently completed his psychiatric residency. He has practiced psychiatry in a variety of settings including community mental health centers, Harvard Community Health Plan and private practice. In addition he served as a consulting psychiatrist at the Indiana University Student Health Services from 1981-1982 and was psychiatric consultant to the Day and Evening Treatment Substance Abuse Program at Harvard Community Health Plan from 1990 to 1993. He adopted a holistic approach in his treatment of patients, drawing on conventional medicine as well alternative therapies including homeopathy, herbs and supplements, and mind-body techniques. He most recently retired from private practice of psychiatry in 2007 in order to develop teaching seminars for the public and professionals. Postgraduate studies included training in behavior therapy, cognitive therapy as well as psychopharmacology. In addition he studied classical homeopathy at the New England School of Homeopathy and received a Diploma from the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in 1996. His teaching experience includes teaching medical students from Hahnemann Medical School, Indiana University School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School. He was a co-presenter of a workshop on Homeopathy at the American Psychiatric Association in 1998.
Rebecca Reese, M.D. graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1993. Following this she completed a medical residency and board certification in Internal Medicine in Portland, Oregon, while concurrently studying cranial osteopathy; she subsequently undertook four years of postgraduate study at the Hahnemann School of Homeopathy. She currently has a medical practice in Portland, Oregon, specializing in cranial osteopathy and homeopathy. Dr. Reese's first career was in cello performance. She graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with a B.F.A. in violincello performance, pursued further study at the University of Denver, and served as an Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Alaska. This was followed by a career as a freelance cellist playing extensively in the classical music arena and the television and motion picture industry in Los Angeles. She has been involved spiritual practice at the Nityananda Institute since 1984.
Laura Santi, L. AC.,is nationally and state licensed in Oregon. She graduated from the New England School of Acupuncture in 1991 and pursued further clinical training in Shanghai, China. She also attended the Traditional Acupuncture Institute in Maryland, learning the 5 Element Style of acupuncture, and competed further studies at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. She is a certified classical hatha yoga teacher, in addition to having studied homeopathy at the New England School of Homeopathy. She also practiced Aikido for two years. She studied NRT, or “Nutritional Response Testing”, a strength test to bring to light nutritional deficiencies and possible allergens or toxins in a person’s environment. She applies acute style acupuncture to treat sudden problems such as back sprains or injuries from car accidents, and constitutional style treatment for chronic long term difficulties such as stress and depression. Her style is predominantly 5 Element, with a mixture of Chinese and Japanese styles which results in using fewer needles than one might find in most offices. She does not use moxa, an herb that is often burned in acupuncture, and so individuals with odor or chemical sensitivities can feel comfortable.
Barry Shulak is a magna cum laude graduate of Western States Chiropractic College and an associate chiropractor with Chiropractic First, LLC. Licensed in Oregon since February 2007, Dr. Shulak has accumulated over 100 hours of post-graduate training in Applied Kinesiology and is currently working toward a fellowship in Clinical Biomechanics of Posture (CBP). The focus of his work is on finding and correcting global structural problems to reduce musculoskeletal pain and—more importantly—strengthen immunity and overall health. He is particularly interested in monitoring the most current research validating the relationship between structure and optimal physiological function. His presentation shows how chiropractic manipulative therapy, specific rehab exercises, and mechanical traction promote improved health by remodeling tissue and stimulating central nervous system reflexes.
Dr. Laura Washington is a naturopathic physician licensed and practicing in the state of Oregon. She received her
doctor of naturopathic medicine from the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in 1998. She has served as
adjunct faculty at NCNM and Lewis and Clark College. She is founder of The Art of Health; a company designed to
support individuals in finding their best state of health through knowledge, products and services.

Dr. Washington is the author of the book Herbal Medicine for Health and Well-Being ,
which is designed to empower the individual to make safe, effective, and appropriate choices to support their health.
As a Naturopathic physician, Dr. Washington enjoys working with people in the process of discovering health in a truly
holistic manner utilizing traditional naturopathic treatments such as, botanical medicine, nutrition, hydrotherapy,
bodywork techniques, and Hatha yoga. Incorporating The BodyTalk System into her practice allows for her to address
underlying causes of disease that are otherwise very difficult to access.
